Professional Learning Community to Improve Access and Understanding of Mathematics (with local math and special educators)
In this collaborative project I am working with an amazing and dedicated collection of math, instructional assistants, and special educators to think about how to improve mathematics instruction to center access and sense making for all students. We meet regularly to reflect on student learning and plan instruction. Ultimately we hope that this work can improve mathematics instruction for all students, and provide insights into how to work in a professional community to improve mathematics instruction.
Improving Instruction for Students with Math Learning Differences and Disabilities
In this ongoing project my research team and I work with students who have experienced significant difficulties learning mathematics. We assess the nature of the students’ difficulties and the ways in which standard mathematical representations may be inaccessible. We then design tailored instructional approaches which account for the unique ways in which the student understands mathematics and evaluate these approaches in one-on-one tutoring sessions.
Building Educator Capacity to Facilitate Culturally Responsive Teaching about Disability Justice
I am fortunate enough to partner with Rooted in Rights (RIR), a program of Disability Rights Washington (DRW) and the Governor’s Office of Education Ombuds (OEO) on this project examining how to support educators who are adopting and implementing The One Out of Five (OO5) Disability History and Pride Project. This OO5 disability history curriculum attempts to shift conversations and school climates and promote intersectional disability justice.
